Ilomantsi Museum Foundation's destination Möhkö Ironworks opens its doors for the summer season again on June 1st. The summer promises inspiring exhibitions, captivating history, and great events.
Möhkö Ironworks is the heart of Möhkö village. The old ironworks area was once even Finland's largest industrial facility producing iron from lake ore. Today, the ironworks area serves as a museum and recreational area. The entrance ticket to Möhkö Ironworks includes exhibitions in the main building of the ironworks, Pytty: Malavista sukunaksi (From Ore to Spark) presents iron production at Möhkö Ironworks, and Möhkö sodassa (Möhkö in War) tells about the phases of Möhkö village during wartime. Metsien Möhkö (Möhkö of the Forests) illuminates the forestry work after the ironworks ceased operations. Additionally, the ticket includes the blast furnace ruins and Möhkö Ironworks Workshop located in the outdoor area of the museum. Möhkönvirta - Contemporary Art Exhibition is placed alongside and amidst the museum exhibitions. Contemporary art among museum artifacts creates an interesting dialogue between contemporary art and the musealized past. The contemporary art exhibition has long been a part of Möhkö Ironworks' summer, and this year's exhibition features nine artists from around Finland, Estonia, and Belgium.
The outdoor area of Möhkö Ironworks is also a wonderful destination. Paths and old canals crisscross along Möhkönkoski rapids. The paths also lead to a bridge over Möhkönkoski, through which one can reach Möhkö Arboretum, an arboretum.
You can explore the history and exhibitions of Möhkö Ironworks both independently and with guided tours. Various themed guided tours offer insights into the ironworks' history, outdoor buildings, blacksmith's work, and other interesting topics. More detailed descriptions of the themed guided tours can also be found on our website at www.mohkonruukki.fi.
In our summer events produced in cooperation with Möhkö Tourist Association ry., the theme is nature. On Sunday, July 9th, Möhkö Ironworks Day is celebrated, featuring a diverse family program with plenty of nature-related activities and experiences. Night of Light in Möhkö on Saturday, August 26th, illuminates the Möhkö Ironworks area with atmospheric lights. In the glow of the lights lit in the twilight evening, enjoy good food, pleasant activities, and togetherness. Furthermore, admission to the event is free, as it is part of the North Karelia Provincial Day events.
Möhkö Ironworks is open daily from June 1st to August 31st. The exception is Midsummer's Eve, when the ironworks is closed. On Midsummer's Day, the ironworks museum is open from 11 AM to 8 PM.
