The guided tour of the Luontopirtti Mesikkä exhibition introduces visitors to the special features of Ilomantsi's nature and examples of local fauna. Additionally, the tour delves into nature-related traditional beliefs, especially the rich bear tradition.
The Luontopirtti Mesikkä exhibition is based on the unique collection of stuffed animals by Heimo Rautava, a hunter and teacher from Ilomantsi, which Rautava compiled for educational use. In Luontopirtti Mesikkä, you can see the most typical animal species of North Karelian nature, magnificent landscapes, and an atmospheric soundscape. The dioramas built into the exhibition space introduce visitors to bog landscapes as well as dry pine forests with their fauna. In addition, at Luontopirtti Mesikkä, you can learn about folk beliefs, listen to the calls of cranes, and marvel at the size of a bear standing on two legs.
